Chengdu
2023-2025Near my home is Gaopan Farmers’ Market, always very lively. Spring brings baskets of bamboo shoots, summer earthy mushrooms, autumn the sweet smoke of roasted chestnuts, and winter rows of Sichuan sausages hanging overhead.
I began sketching the market in 2023 and kept returning to it through 2025.
At midday, when the crowds thin, vendors nap among their produce. By evening, a few stall owners gather to play mahjong, the clack of tiles cutting through the air. An auntie recommends the best chilies for stir-fried pork; a butcher wraps fresh wontons during promotions. Yellow ginger sprouts wildly by my stove, the bun shop sells out before six, fresh tofu requires a line, and on the winter solstice a lamb soup vendor cooks a single portion for me in a pot meant for ten.
Slowly, everyday life becomes steeped in the scent of peppercorns, chilies, and fermented bean paste.

家附近有一个很大的菜市场,叫做高攀农贸市场,无论春夏秋冬都是很繁忙很热闹的景象,春天各式各样的笋子,夏天带着泥土的菌子,秋天糖炒栗子的香气和冬天屋顶上的腊肠。
这组速写从2023年开始,陆陆续续画到2025年底,本以为画了一遍就不想再画,可是还是会在下次再去到菜市场的时候心动。于是不知不觉断断续续画了三年。
中午人少的时候,摊主会在一众蔬菜水果之间打盹,傍晚人流散去后,附近几位摊主凑出一桌麻将噼里啪啦。
热心的嬢嬢告诉我哪种辣椒炒肉好吃,卖猪肉的摊位做活动时现包抄手一块一盒。本地的黄姜买回来放在锅边疯狂发芽长成富贵竹的模样。馒头店不到六点就卖完收摊了,隔壁新鲜的豆腐刚出锅要排队才买得到,冬至的羊汤老板帮我用十人的大铁锅现炒了一人份。日子就一点点被花椒辣椒,豆瓣酱的香气包裹。
